Professor Miguel Viveiros

Miguel Viveiros is Full Professor with Habilitation in Biomedical Sciences (Speciality Microbiology) in the Unit of Medical Microbiology (Group of Mycobacteriology) of the Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical da Universidade Nova de Lisboa.


He has a Bachelor in Sciences with Major in Microbiology, a Master in Sciences in Biotechnology (Chemical Engineering) and a PhD degree in Biology (Microbial Genetics) from the Universidade de Lisboa. In 2012 obtained the Habilitation in Biomedical Sciences (Speciality Microbiology) by the Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Currently, is researcher and teacher in Medical Microbiology and President of the Pedagogical Council of the IHMT/UNL, and an invited professor at the Faculdade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro (Brasil).


His main areas of interest are centred in the support of the mission and institutional strategy of teaching and capacity building for the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) in Biomedical Sciences, International Health and Tropical Medicine. Scientific activity devoted to the early diagnosis of active or latent tuberculosis (TB) infections as well as the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to deal with MDRTB and with other drug resistant bacterial infections. In my almost 20 years of scientific career has been highly interested in the study and development of new diagnostic tools and alternative therapies to treat drug resistant diseases such as multidrug resistant tuberculosis and methicillin-vancomycin resistant staphylococcal infections, using new biotechnologies and new therapies incorporating non-antibiotic adjuvants of chemotherapy. In particular the Viveiros’ laboratory has studied, in the last 15 years, the contribution of the efflux-pumps and membrane transporters to bacterial multidrug resistant phenotypes and how we can prevent, reverse or reduce the level of resistance and recover the effectiveness of the antibiotics to which the bacteria became resistant. We have been also interested in the molecular biology of mycobacteria, immunology and whole genome sequencing of TB, focused on the early diagnosis of active or latent tuberculosis (TB), early detection and prevention of multidrug/extensively drug resistant TB and other antibiotic resistant bacterial infections (e.g. met. resist. S. aureus, B-lactam resist Enterobacteriaceae). We have described several mechanisms and strategies to circumvent drug resistance in (myco)bacteria via improved antibiotic uptake by inhibiting efflux-pumps, drug targeting and molecular vectorization using nanotechnology. Main teaching areas of interest and expertise have been in support of the mission and institutional strategy of capacity building in Biomedical Sciences, Medical Microbiology, Global Health and Tropical Medicine for the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). Coordinated and participated in various national and EU research projects in these areas (aprox. 4,5M€), and supervised and/or co-supervised several postgraduate degrees (5 pos-docs, 10 PhD, 24 MSc students). Founding member and Treasurer (until 2017), currently management committee member of the Study Group for Mycobacterial Infections (ESGMYC) of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) ( ).
